Happy 2013!

Happy New Year!

2012 was an amazing year for fitness and service related activities in the Greater Washington Area.  Since starting in summer of 2012, I’ve publicized and participated in some great events that promote health, movement, and good causes improving the quality of life for all residents in our region including:

STROGA’s Power Flow – Donation only class
Acumen  Race for a Cause 8k
Nueva Vida’s Zumbathon
5K Run/Walk for Youth Justice
SOME Trot for Hunger 5K

Each year the list of races posted on Washington Running Report seems to get longer and longer.  Yoga Alliance reports that the number of individuals registering as certified yoga instructors continues to grow at a record pace.  So whether it’s signing up for your first 5K race or stepping into a new studio for your first yoga class, it’s never been easier to be fit, active and outdoors in DC!

So the question is WHAT IS GOING TO MOVE YOU in 2013?

Here’s a suggestion!  Train now and start with Bright Beginnings 5K on March 2, 2013!

Whether its a run, dance, hike, or yoga class, I hope to see you out at an event in 2013!  To be sure I plan to post at least one event per month and am always open to suggestions.  Please feel free to send me a message at:

2012 Comes to a Close with SOME’s 5K Trot for Hunger

Run, support, advocate!

RUN, SUPPORT, ADVOCATE!

It has been a great year for running events that support wonderful causes and the SOME Trot for Hunger is up there with the best of them.  Held on Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 2012, the 5k Trot for Hunger had blue skies, an incredible turnout, and record fundraising all working together to fight hunger in the District.

Why support So Others Might Eat?  In 2011, the number of homeless families in Washington grew by over 18%.  More homeless men, women and children are depending on SOME for food, services and affordable housing.  By running in the Trot for Hunger you help raise critical unrestricted funds that help SOME to continue to provide hot meals and support to those in need.   In addition, the Trot for Hunger is an important advocacy event that raises awareness about hunger related issues in our region.  This year, as runners crossed the finish line, numerous volunteers held up signs with tweetable facts about poverty, hunger, and food insecurity in DC.

Thanksgiving day is host to numerous walks and races, often called Turkey Trots, around the country.  These races are a great way to give thanks for your health and wellness while supporting causes that support the health and wellness of those less fortunate.  For my friend, Rachel, and I it was also the perfect activity before setting off for a day of enjoying family, friends, and food.  I could not have imagined a better race, day, or cause to close out 2012.

Run for Youth Justice in Arlington, VA on 10/7

The leaves are changing and the air is crisp, sound like perfect running weather has arrived in Washington, DC!  So lace up and put together your running calendar because there are numerous opportunities this fall to run for a cause!

Next Sunday you can be a part of the First Annual 5k Run/Walk for Youth Justice on  October 7 at Bluemont Park in Arlington, VA to benefit Families and Allies of Virginia’s Youth (FAVY), a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the juvenile justice system in Virginia to one that is fair, effective and age-appropriate, and empowering and supporting families and young people who encounter the juvenile justice system.

For those of you who hate having to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to a race, this race if for YOU!!  The race will begin at 12 noon on October 7 at the Bluemont Picnic Shelter (329 N. Manchester Street) in Bluemont Park in Arlington, VA. Folks who need transportation from the Ballston Metro Station, are encouraged to email Leah at RunforYouthJustice@gmail.com by October 1.

This run/walk is for everyone and anyone who feels like getting a little cardio in the spirit of justice!  The organizers want you to know that you don’t have to be a runner to support this cause! You can walk, and there will be a post-race party under the pavilion for anyone who wants to celebrate their accomplishment and help bring awareness to this issue.

The 5k Run/Walk for Youth Justice is part of a multi-state, country-wide race and event series on behalf of National Youth Justice Awareness Month (Y-JAM). Y-JAM was created five years ago by a Missouri parent Tracy McClard, who lost her son to the adult criminal justice system. Tracy knew that if people only knew the truth of how youth are treated in the criminal justice system, they would realize that our policies need to change, and so she created a run in her small town in order to bring awareness to the 250,000 youth in the adult and over 2 million youth in the juvenile justice systems every year.

Move for a Cause! Zumbathon Charity Event on 9/22

Saturday September 22, 2012 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM EDT

I’m definitely a fan of movement for a cause!  I’ve also had the benefit of working with Nueva Vida and know that they are providing vital information and resources to Latino families across the region.  Nueva Vida is a DC based nonprofit that supports and empowers Latinas whose lives are affected by cancer, and advocates for and facilitates the timely access to cancer care.  Each year Nueva Vida serves more than 3,500 Latinas and their families in the Washington DC, Baltimore, and Richmond metropolitan areas.

As for Zumba®, if you don’t know what it is, you really need to get out more!  Zumba Fitness® is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends international music and contagious steps to form a “fitness-party” that is downright addictive.

Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba program has grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program with more than 14 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 140,000 locations across more than 150 countries.

So whether you are curious about trying Zumba or are already a hardcore enthusiast, stand up to cancer and get out and shake your thang!

September’s Cause: For Love of Children (FLOC)

FLOC
Located roughly a block away from STROGA is the home of For Love of Children (FLOC), a nonprofit that has been in operation since 1965.  FLOC provides educational services beyond the classroom to help students succeed from first grade through college and career. FLOC brings together students, volunteers, families, and community partners in proven programs that teach, empower, and transform.  Today, roughly 25 staff and 300 volunteers serve nearly 600 students per year in local schools and FLOC’s facilities.

FLOC’s services are provided for free to students from low-income families in the District of Columbia and West Virginia.  FLOC has learned from experience that when students are encouraged and prepared, they can overcome any challenges and complete their educations.  This attitude has earned FLOC a reputation as “One of the best small charities in the Greater Washington region.” – Greater Washington Catalogue of Philanthropy

Volunteer!
Nearly 75% of DC students perform below grade level in reading and math. YOU can change that!   There are many ways that you can make a significant difference in the lives of DC children.  FLOC has numerous volunteer opportunities from serving as a tutor in the Neighborhood Tutoring Program, becoming a program assistant with the Scholars Program, or signing up to be a FLOC Ambassador!  Interested?  Good!  Becuase FLOC is now recruiting for school year 2012-2013! Be one of the 300 volunteers that support FLOC and their 600 students each year! Click here to learn more!

Run for FLOC!
Another fantastic reason to come out and support FLOC this month is that yoga is a great counter balance to running and we know you are all signing up to support FLOC in the Acumen Solutions 4th Annual Race for a Cause™ 8K on October Sunday, October 14, 2012 in Arlington, VA.  FLOC will be one of 10 charities benefitting from the race and it’s up to the runner or walker to pick which charity their donation will benefit.
